About Stephen Hopkins

Stephen Hopkins is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Sonix, the AI transcription, translation, and subtitling platform he founded in 2017 with Jamie Sutherland and David Dat Nguyen. He leads engineering, overseeing the speech-recognition pipeline that has processed more than 14.2 million hours of audio and video in 54+ languages. His responsibilities span product architecture, infrastructure, and security, including the technical work supporting Sonix's SOC 2 Type 2 and HIPAA programs.

Before Sonix, Stephen was the second employee at Gusto, where he helped build its payroll technology and later led the payroll engineering team as the company expanded nationwide. He previously worked at Pivotal Labs in San Francisco and began his career as an electrical engineer at a nuclear power plant in Knoxville, Tennessee. He holds a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering from McGill University.

Stephen writes about speech-to-text technology and AI transcription, drawing on his experience building and operating Sonix's audio and video processing systems.

Based in Petaluma, California, Stephen enjoys long-distance cycling, grilling, skiing, and spending time with his two kids and his dog, Friday.
