Standard Mandarin (Putonghua in mainland China, Guoyu in Taiwan) is based on Beijing pronunciation, but regional accents differ noticeably — Taiwanese and southern speakers often merge the retroflex zh/ch/sh sounds with z/c/s, while northern speech adds erhua (r-coloring).
