MPEG is an acronym for the ‘Moving Picture Experts Group,’ an organization that develops standards for encoding and decoding digital audio and video files. In conjunction with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), MPEG works hard to ensure that compression standards are widely adopted and universally available to studios, producers, and consumers. Using MPEG compression, a multimedia file will be significantly smaller with little noticeable loss in quality. MPEG compression is so ubiquitous that the term ‘MPEG’ is commonly used to refer to a video file saved in an MPEG file format rather than the organization itself.
