Capturing Great Audio | Convert audio-to-text with Sonix

Recording environment advice

William:
How do I capture great audio? The first thing that I try to do is just always record in a quiet space. So obviously you know reducing the noise and you're environment is super important and everyone says that but it's worth mentioning because it's something that you do need to kind of stress on a little bit.

William:
I have a home studio which is just basically a renovated bedroom that I have converted into a place where I record. I took the closet and I kind of put acoustical tiles in there to make it more conducive to recording and I also try when I can to stand up while I'm talking. I just find that get a better sound that way.

Proper microphone techniques

William:
The next thing that I always try to do is observe proper microphone technique. You know you don't want to be too far or too close to your microphone. The closer that you are the more you risk clipping or overdriving the further you are the weaker the vocal will sound. It might sound a little tinny or just distant and that requires you to do more to bring it up and make it sound good in the forefront of the recording.

William:
I spent a lot of time coaching whoever I'm talking to to make sure that they're staying close to the microphone at all times and they're being in a consistent distance away from it.

Microphone suggestion - Shure SM7B

William:
It also doesn't hurt to have good equipment so what I've tried to do is invest in some decent microphones. I use a Shure SM7B microphone both for myself and for the guest. And I find that they sound really great. I don't have to do a lot to them in terms of processing.

William:
I plug those into a Zoom recorder so I use Zoom H6 and I just find that it does a really great job recording. I've used other audio interfaces in the past and by far this is the best sounding one that I use as my Zoom. So I love to use that.

Editing & cleaning up audio

William:
And then one thing that I like to do is actually edit the podcast you know go in after I've recorded things and take out filler words minimized breath, if I can, remove mistakes, dead air.

William:
You know I'm just kind of clean things up to make things more concise. You know somebody is kind of rambling on and on about something I'll try to shorten it and I find that that does a lot in terms of how people think in terms of the quality of the audio.

Audio clean-up tool suggestions

William:
The more concise that it sounds, the more confident that it sounds by taking out the stammers and stuff you know stutters and stuff like that, it's really helpful. Then I do some audio processing. So I use some plugins. I use one from Izotope called RX Elements and it's a bundled piece of software.

William:
It allows you to take out hums and clicks and just little artifacts that you could find in your audio recording. There's another tool from Izotope that I use called Nectar 2 which has some really cool presets for different types of sounds and so I'll use that once in a while. I'll usually use a compressor to make sure that the audio remains at a consistent level because again it is hard sometimes to get people to stay in the same dynamic range and sometimes you don't want them to.

William:
Sometimes you want them you know depending on what they're talking about. You know if there's excitement you want that to come through but you don't want to overdrive. You know with the sound is for the listener so I use a compressor. And then the final thing that I do is once I bounce down all the vocal tracks and the whole you know podcast basically into an MP3 file, I'll run it through Auphonic which is an online tool.

William:
It's actually a desktop tool as well but most people use it as the online tool, and it's a leveler. And so just make sure that the volume of your podcast is optimized for mobile listening since most people listen to podcasts through mobile.

William:
I found that that does a really good job at keeping you know the volume levels where they need to be. When you plug in earbuds are you putting in your car etc.

William:
So those are the things that I do to get a good sound.

Full Transcript by Sonix: Taylor Swift interviewed by Barbara Walters

Introduction

Next is a young woman who moved from Nashville to New York this year and seems bent on global domination. Her parents named her after James Taylor and her fans are called Swifties. If you haven't guessed her name by now you are clearly living under a very large rock. One magazine headline says it best. Taylor Swift is the music industry.

You could say there was one song this year that you just couldn't shake off: Shake it off. Taylor Swift's giant hit single off her a giant hit album 1989. 1989 sold over a million copies its first week. Unheard of these days and was the only album to go platinum in 2014. The one time teen country singer became a pop powerhouse this year. A one woman exception to the rule that in the digital artists cannot make money selling records.

Are you worried about losing fans?

This is your first album of all pop songs. Are you at all worried that you will lose some of the country fans?

I am not worried about that. I'm really in touch with my fans and I know what they like. What my fans in general were afraid of was that I would start making pop music and I would stop writing smart lyrics. Or I would stop writing emotional lyrics. And when they heard the new music they realized that that wasn't the case at all.

Taylor's success is based on her close relationship with her fans. They are called Swifties. They see themselves in her and she sees herself in them.

Your fans feel so personal about you. I mean you're the only one I know who invites people back into your house. Do you still do that?

Yeah, I decided that I wanted to play this entire album for the fans long before it came out. I wanted it to be like this whole secret society gatherings and living rooms. And so I decided to have them in my houses.

We have 89 fans waiting in the living room. The entire 1989 record.

I want to come up with as many ways that we can spend time together and bond because it keeps me normal. It keeps my life feeling manageable.

Is your life normal?

Is your life at all normal?

No.

No.

Not at all. And that's why when I go online and I go on Instagram and I see a post from Emma who lives in Philadelphia and she's talking about how her day was at school that day. That helps me.

You still do that?

It's the only thing that keeps me not feeling overwhelmed by the abnormality of my life.

What's the most abnormal?

The most abnormal thing about my life is having sort of crowds form everywhere you go. And just everywhere. So that starts happening and then you have to take security everywhere you go. All of a sudden you realize that you have not been alone truly for five years.

Taylor has been a star writing and singing her own songs from the time she was 16 when her first country music album debuted.

My senior year.

Relationships

She's won just about every music award there is. Going on. before our eyes. Her autobiographical songs deal with the problems of growing up and having or not having relationships. But while her fans identify, critics have accused the two autobiographical.

If a guy shares his experience in writing, he's brave. If a woman shares her experience in writing, she's oversharing. And she's she's over emotional. Or she might be crazy or watch out shall write a song about you. Well that is joke is there is that joke is so old and it's it's coming from a place of such sexism.

Boyfriends

As she has become more famous so have the boyfriends. Her hits chronicle of high profile relationships that blossom with her die and then get turned into song lyrics. But Just as her music has changed, so has her attitude toward romance.

Love & heartbreak fading to the background

It seems like when I move to New York love and heartbreak and all the things that used to be my main factors in my music kind of faded to the background. Of course love is still very interesting to me as a writer but.

As a writer not as a beautiful young woman?

Now right now.

No?

I just like I just feel really happy and I'm really protective of that.

Narrator:
The Joe Rogan Experience.

Joe Rogan:
So there's very very few fake Jujitsu black belts, but occasionally there are some and they get outed. And there's some hilarious videos online of guys getting busted.

Guest:
Then, where does Steven Seagal fall on that line?

Joe Rogan:
He is a legitimate Aikido black belt. In fact he was an instructor one of the very first Americans to teach at a dojo in Japan.

Guest:
Oh no shit.

Joe Rogan:
So Steven Seagal.

Guest:
Wow

Joe Rogan:
But the martial art is the questionable thing. It's the martial art of Aikido is and it's really a martial art that was created to disarm people with swords. The idea was that you lost your sword in combat and someone was coming at you with a sword. Last ditch effort is you had to be able to use someone's momentum against them. You have to be able to use some guy comes at you with a sword. You have to be very adept at catching their arm and flipping them over.

Joe Rogan:
Here's Segal.

Guest:
It's very subtle right.

Joe Rogan:
Let's let's not use this because it's easy to poke fun at him when he's old. But let's go to that black and white one. See that black and white one down there? Go to that. If you go back. See that one right there Steven Seagal? Go to that one. Now there's some some footage of him when he was young. Yeah. This is it. Go full screen. He's legit. He is very legit. And he was thin. It was a different thing. But the thing is nobody comes at you like this in a fucking NCAA wrestler would shoot a double on him and take him down faster than you can possibly imagine. I mean this does not work.

Guest:
It's a dance.

Joe Rogan:
Well it works. It works if someone does know what they're doing or if you have a lot of physical attributes like Seagal is a huge guy. He's a very big guy and he probably could pull that off on a lot of people who don't know how to fight.

Guest:
Yeah.

Joe Rogan:
Now here. This is what it was about. What Aikido is really about this is Kendo though they're using swords which maybe they do use some of that in Aikido.

Joe Rogan:
But what Aikido was originally created for. I hope I'm not mistaken was learning how to disarm... Like that. The guy comes at him with a knife and he flips the guy and takes the knife away. He's using the guy's energy against him. That was the original intention of Aikido.

Joe Rogan:
But in terms of the Japanese martial arts Aikido was never thought of as the most effective.

Joe Rogan:
Judo is far more effective because Judo involves people grabbing people and flipping them and slamming them on the ground. Like there's a great video of an old Judo master. See if you find this video. This guy he looks like he's about 80 years old he weighs about 13 pounds and he is... You can tell especially someone who knows martial arts you can tell when someone's just giving in. The problem is a lot of these demonstrations are Aikido as guys are just giving in.

Joe Rogan:
Like this old dude. Watch this old dude. The old dude on the right hand side is so much bigger than the other guy and they're walking the guy around and like he's really throwing this guy.

Guest:
Yeah right.

Joe Rogan:
This is legit. Like this guy's trying not to get thrown and he doesn't know what to do. He trips him to the ground there. But this old guy is tiny but he's using perfect leverage and perfect technique. And fuck he looks really old in this picture. Like the guy's trying to throw him there and he can't pull it off.

Guest:
Yeah.

Joe Rogan:
And he can't pull it off because the older guy has perfect position and perfect. What does the name of this video? Perfect leverage. Look at this. "Ninety year old judo master" is the name of the video online. And I don't know if he was really 90 but he certainly looks like he could be 90 but this old guy just knows how to.. Notice also the back of his heels are always like lifting up he's moving. This guy's trying to throw him and he's just... And the guy who's trying to throw him appears to be a black belt. At least he's wearing a black belt. Fucking incredible man. It's really amazing.

Joe Rogan:
So Judo was a much more effective martial art and Judo was actually was it was taught to the Brazilians. When Count Maeda went to Brazil and taught people in Brazil particularly the graces. They taught them Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the Gracie's took Brazil what was Judo at the time and they took the ground attacks of Judo and just perfected them and then honed them and changed them and made them more technical and really worked on utilizing leverage and utilizing submissions. And they they turned that into Brazilian Jujitsu.

Guest:
So Judo is standing as well as ground?

Joe Rogan:
Yes there's a ground aspect of Judo. I was like Ronda Rousey is one of the most famous submission artists in the UFC and her background was in Judo. She was a Judo player and very good at Judo. She was a bronze medalist. So when she would get ahold of people she would just fucking and throw them on their ass and flip them and toss them and slam into the ground. She just had phenomenal judo, but also a wicked arm bar. And that was because the ke-wasa the ground attack for part of Jujitsu comes from Judo. So there you go.

Guest:
My father did Judo and he taught it to me and my brother and then I remember my brother was bigger than me and he used to flip the fuck out of me and then he did it to me one day and my father grabbed him and flipped him down on the ground. It was like this is not good. This is this isn't like passing on knowledge. This is just a violent family outta control.

Joe Rogan:
Was your dad drunk?

Guest:
He was 6 foot 2.

Joe Rogan:
Cigarette in his hand?

Guest:
Cigarette. Yeah fuck...

Joe Rogan:
Yeah, Judo is legit. Judo is way more legit than Aikido. It's not like Aikido is not legit.

Guest:
Aikido looks like a lot of pressure points in holding the wrist and arm ...

Joe Rogan:
There's a lot of that. Now most of it is throws and learning how to take an attacker. Like if you just charge forward and the Aikido guy and you have your right hand come up like cocked and ready just run at him and throw that punch. A really good Aikido is gonna grab that flipping and slam you on the ground.

Guest:
Right.

Joe Rogan:
But you know how often does that come up?

Guest:
Yeah.

Joe Rogan:
You know most especially today when people actually know how to fight... It's it's too limited.

Guest:
Yeah.

Joe Rogan:
But there's a lot of martial arts like that like there's certain aspects of karate that are applicable but there's a lot of it that's really limited.

Hank Green:
Good morning John. OK. That's a weird word by which I mean OK.

Hank Green:
OK means like fine. Good. Satisfactory. Approved. None of those words you got to have k's in there aren't any words that are just capital letters.

Hank Green:
This isn't normal and yet OK is possibly the most spoken word on the planet not because we say it a lot in the U.S. which we do, but also because we say it a lot everywhere. So many other languages have been like yeah actually that one... that one's good. We'll take that. From Mandarin to Hebrew to Flemish to Russian to Indian to Portuguese. OK. Is it OK. It's a common affirmative word.

Hank Green:
What does ok even mean? It's like you want to approve of something but not a lot. Finally, we have a word for the good without all the good tied up in it.

Hank Green:
Like if I fall down you say, "Are you OK?" All you're really asking is: "Is there something wrong?"

Hank Green:
It's like an acceptance without any values or perspective or opinions laid on top of it. And I want that I can just be OK and that's OK.

Hank Green:
Where did it actually come from though? Allow me to introduce you to the only Wikipedia page that has a list of potential etymologies for a word. And it's very long.

Hank Green:
Maybe it comes from "Och aye" like Scottish. Oh yes. Or from the Greek phrase "Ola Kala" meaning all good. Maybe?

Hank Green:
But etymologists and historians have settled on three prime theories. We'll get to the most settled upon one last.

Hank Green:
But let's start with a West African origin... That's brought to the US by slave 1784 verified use of the word K rather than OK is a transcription of something a slave said in North Carolina. And this may come from a common West African phrase "O ke" or "Waw Kay" depending on the language. That's basically an affirmative or a back channel. A back channel is what linguists call that thing that you do where you make a noise or you say a phrase or a word it just to let somebody know that you understood what they said. And among the many uses for the word OK remains backchannel if you're on the phone if you like ok. Huh. Yep. Mm hmm. OK. Like that!

Hank Green:
The second the Choctaw word, "OKeh" which maybe was also somewhat similar and other Native American languages. And from what I can tell this is not particularly easy to translate but probably it means something to the effect of "it is so." And is also apparently sometimes used as a backchannel. Weirdly enough. The definite thing that we do know is when it entered into the popular lexicon of average Americans as the letter O and the letter K in the late eighteen thirties there was this weird fad for comically misspelling things in newspapers? I don't know.

Hank Green:
And then you would take those common misspellings and create acronyms from them. Like another example of a similar word was O. W. Which was for: "Oll Wright." Later, they had "Oll Korrect." OK now this like all of the other weird comical misspelling acronyms would have been completely forgotten if not for Martin Van Buren? The Democratic Party decided to like take this weird okay meme and apply it to Martin Van Buren whose name sounded too Dutch I guess? But, he was from Kinderhook, New York and they called him Ol' Kindlerhook. But that probably also wouldn't have stuck around if people hadn't been looking for ways to save characters on telegrams. Because you paid by the letter.

Hank Green:
And then OK continue to trundle down the decades until we got to where we are now.

Hank Green:
For me, the amazing thing about this word is how normal and everyday it is despite the fact that it is very weird and unusual and we never noticed that. And it sort of exists in the background as part of the fabric of culture not as something that we immediately identify as something that we're confused and debased by. But it is confusing and amazing. And I guess that's OK.

Hank Green:
John, I'll see you on Tuesday.
