Kim Niemer:
Hi, this is Kim Nemer and I am here to give you your podcast update of the December six City Council meeting. It was a very active and energetic meeting. We opened up the meeting with a transition. We seeded our two new city council members and we also wished two of our outgoing members well and appreciation of their service. So Mayor Kristin Schreder and council member Erin Resner both concluded their terms and the city manager presented them with a photo book and a resolution. We gave them a commemorative tile piece from Community Services and really showed some appreciation for all their hard work. Erin for four years and Kristin for eight years, and then followed up that with their replacements. So Teressa Audette and Jack Munns joined the dais along with Michael Dacquisto, who was reelected and is serving his second term. And then the council does, as it does annually, which is to appoint its own officers. So in Redding we don't have a directly elected mayor. The council selects a mayor from among them, and this time the nomination was for Michael Dacquisto to be mayor and for Marc Mezanno to be vice mayor and Tenessa Audette to be Mayor pro tem. And that motion was approved 4 to 1.
Katie:
And then we moved into the regular calendar, the number of just routine items on the consent agenda purchases. And I say one thing I might want to point out is that they did approve a project to upgrade all the audio visual equipment in the city council chambers, and that has been a problem for some time. So we'll be getting the latest technology in there that will better capture for the public who's viewing the meetings, but also audio visual displays and exhibits. Speakers want to incorporate into their presentation. So from staff, we're all looking forward to having better equipment in the council chambers. We also authorize the adoption of a new position called Transit Manager. So that will take over for management of the RABA system. That's a new position. So if you know anybody that's in that field, have them keep an eye out for that posting in the next few weeks. The big item of the night was South City Park and the Community Services Advisory Commission and staff have been working for over a year to develop a concept that could move forward to reopen South City Park. So there was a lot of interest. The City Council received over 200 emails in support of the park and the audience was standing room only for the meeting.
Katie:
The concept included a number of elements and with a justification that in order to have enough people coming to the park to create an environment that seems friendly and safe, that you have to have multiple activities that layer the uses between different age groups, different times of day, small events, big events, capturing all of that. So the proposal included seven different activity centers, including pickleball, a destination playground, indoor outdoor pavilion, open grass turf area, a dog area, an older youth area, and a walking trail walking circuit. There was a robust discussion and debate and about 3 hours of testimony before the city council approved the park concept plan, the application for a $3.5 million grant and made all the CEQA findings. And so that vote was 3 to 2. And then that really concluded it. It was already close to 11:00. There was one other personnel routine personnel item, but it was a good night. We had a lot of community engagement, a lot of people in the Park View, Garden Tract, and Wildwood Neighborhoods coming out to share their ideas with the city council. That's it. Until next time, Thank you.
