Katie:
Today's recap is from the Council meeting on Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023. A few notable items from the consent calendar. A resolution was passed to declare May 8th, 2023 California Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 14th through the 20th as National Police Week in the city of Redding. Next, the City of Redding will increase the contract with no boundaries to add an additional 20 hotel rooms for transitional housing options for the unsheltered. Also, public parking will be free downtown from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, May 19th for the annual Asphalt Cowboys pancake breakfast on Market Street.
Steve:
Next up, there is one public hearing to consider the 202324 action plan for the City of Redding Housing Division. Specifically how they plan to spend US Department of Housing and Urban Development funds to receive the funding. The city puts together a five year plan and then breaks down exactly how they plan to spend the funds each year. This plan details how Redding will spend these funds in our community in 2023 and 2024. City Council opened a public hearing on the 2023 Housing Action Plan. There were no public comments, so then they closed the public hearing and approved the housing action plan unanimously.
Katie:
Now to the regular calendar, presented its 2023 wildfire mitigation plan, as well as an independent evaluators report on that plan. An independent evaluators report is required every few years by California Senate Bill 901 RUE. Director Nick Settle presented how RU is actively working to mitigate fire in our community by trimming and moving hazardous trees, wrapping power poles with special fire resistant wrap, employing the Goat Task force, which cleared 141 acres last year, installing fault indicators on power lines so crews can identify problems faster and modernizing their line inspection process. He also highlighted the new citywide radio program for departmental communications in emergencies.
Steve:
The independent auditor also presented his findings to the council and wanted the community to know that Redding has a very comprehensive plan and has taken fire prevention more seriously than other communities he has seen. He noted that Redding is doing an impressive job of managing the risk of fire in the community, and that area's wildfire mitigation plan met all the statutory requirements. Part of his report dealt with how Redding compares to other cities in wildland urban interface areas with similar populations. And again, he noted how RU is making great efforts to mitigate the risk of wildfire in our community. After the presentations, the plan was adopted unanimously by the City Council.
Katie:
Lastly, personnel brought a resolution increasing wage rates for a few hard to fill classifications. Specifically in the engineering sector. The hope is that the additional bump in pay will help with recruiting critical support in engineering and construction management positions. This passed unanimously. That's it. Have a great rest of your week and be sure to watch the full video linked in the show notes for all the details.
