And I'm Steve, and this is the City of Redding podcast. In case you missed it, here are some of the latest news from the city of Redding.

Big news on the travel front. Starting May 22nd, 2025, we're getting a brand new daily nonstop flight from Redding to Denver. Thanks to United Airlines, you'll be able to fly directly from the Redding Regional Airport to Denver International Airport. This means Redding residents and businesses get a direct line to one of the biggest economic hubs in the country, and folks from Denver can now come check out all the outdoor adventures we have here from Lassen Volcanic National Park to the waters of Shasta Lake. Mayor Jack Muns put it best it's more than just a flight. It's a bridge that connects our community to the world.

On the sustainability front, we've got a reminder for local businesses about Senate Bill 1383. This new state law requires organic waste, things like food scraps and yard clippings to be separated and recycled. If you're a local business and haven't signed up for this yet, now's the time. The city is here to help, so don't hesitate to reach out and let's work together for a cleaner, greener Redding.

Next, we have some important safety reminders. Redding Electric Utility wants to remind the community that if you ever come across a downed power line, while rare, keep at least 40ft of distance and be sure to call 911 or Redding electric utility. And if you're in a car when it happens, don't get out unless it's an emergency. Safety first.

Always from the Redding Fire Department. Keep it safe with extension cords. Never overload them, never link multiple cords together and definitely don't plug a space heater into one. Overheating cords are a fire hazard, so be careful this winter.

The city of Redding, the Redding Police Department, and Healthy Shasta are launching a new campaign to remind everyone that Eagle Eyes save lives. Whether you walk, bike or drive safely on the road is a shared responsibility. So the next time you push the crosswalk signal or grab your keys for a trip to the grocery store, remember, use your eagle eyes and scan the horizon as far as you can see in all directions. If we all do our part, Eagle eyes will save lives.

In other news, Redding Area Bus Authority's annual Salute to Veterans event raised nearly $16,000 for local veterans transportation. That's nearly double what was raised last year. Big thanks to the generosity of the community and everyone who helped make this event happen.

Here's a quick look at what's coming up in Redding on February 1st. The farmers market happens at Redding City Hall starting at 8:30 a.m. on February 4th. There's a city council meeting at 6 p.m..

On February 14th, the Redding Police Department is hosting a book swap with a cop at turtle Bay Elementary School. They're collecting books for K through eighth graders, so if you've got any new or gently used books lying around, drop them off at the Redding Police Records Division. This is a great way to support local kids and encourage reading. On February 17th, all city offices are closed for Presidents Day.
