This is completely true. Leave the content to the person that hired you and make sure you are laser-focused on how to record the perfect tape sync.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are 8 things you should do to make sure your tape sync is perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"583\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/sonix.ai\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Women-recording-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sonix.ai\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Women-recording-scaled.jpg 583w, https:\/\/sonix.ai\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Women-recording-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 960px) 75vw, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-chat-with-the-person-that-hired-you-for-the-tape-sync\"><strong>1. Chat with the person that hired you for the tape sync<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who are you going to be recording and is there anything you should know about them?<\/li><li>What file format do they want the recording? (Wav is standard, but there are several types, so make sure you confirm which it is).<\/li><li>Where is the interview (outside or inside?). This makes a difference for sound quality.<\/li><li>When do you start rolling?<\/li><li>How much are they paying? Most radio shows pay around $100-$150 for standard tape syncs.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-double-check-your-equipment\"><strong>2. Double check your equipment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ensure you have a good quality external microphone and a recorder.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t use the built-in mic on your recorder. It doesn\u2019t sound as good.<\/li><li>Use a foam windscreen on your mic if you record inside.<\/li><li>Use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Movo-WS9-Microphone-Windscreen-Recorders\/dp\/B00MYGE6B2\">fluffy mic (think Don King hair)<\/a> if you are recording outside.<\/li><li>Clear out the memory card in your recorder.<\/li><li>Make sure you have extra batteries.<\/li><li>Pack headphones.<\/li><li>Double check all your equipment to make sure it works.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-scout-out-the-recording-environment\"><strong>3. Scout out the recording environment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Get there 15 minutes early to get set up and find the quietest place to record. <\/li><li>Make sure you avoid areas where you can hear sounds like an air conditioner or heater, traffic noise, barking dog, ticking clock.<\/li><li>If there is background noise, see if you can fix it (eg. unplug refrigerator).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-check-your-levels\"><strong>4. Check your levels<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have your interviewee speak into the mic so you can get an idea of how loudly they speak. \u201cWhat did you have for breakfast?\u201d is a good question to ask.<\/li><li>Ideally you have their levels around -12 (give or take 6db).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5-get-close-and-personal\"><strong>5. Get close and personal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your mic should be about 4-5 inches away from your interviewees mouth. You should also place it slightly off center so that the \u201cp\u201d pops aren\u2019t captured.<\/li><li>Get in a comfortable position. If you are holding a mic, you\u2019ll need to find a way to rest your arm like a table or a chair. <\/li><li>If you need to shuffle around to get comfortable, try to do it during the interview questions so you don\u2019t disrupt your interviewees responses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"6-dealing-with-background-noise\"><strong>6. Dealing with background noise<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you hear background noise, you\u2019ll need to interrupt and likely repeat whatever questions were affected. <\/li><li> Let the interview know before you start that you\u2019ll likely have to interrupt and redo questions for background noise.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"7-record-room-tone\"><strong>7. Record room tone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To help with the editing process (whoever needs to do it), before you start or before you finish you should record the room you\u2019re in, without anyone speaking for about a minute.<\/li><li>This article explains the importance of recording room tone: <a href=\"https:\/\/sonix.ai\/articles\/remove-background-noise-with-room-tone\">Why room tone is essential for removing background noise from your audio recordings<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"8-dont-mess-with-the-file-just-send-it\"><strong>8. Don\u2019t mess with the file; just send it<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It might be tempting to fix a recording where you know there are issues (levels or \u201cp\u201d pops), but don\u2019t do it. <\/li><li>Making small edits makes it harder for the producer to sync the interview. It\u2019s better to just let them know where you know there may be issues.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s it. If you follow these 8 points, you&#8217;ll be well on your way to record a perfect tape sync. Remember it\u2019s always great if you can get the file to the producer on the same day it\u2019s recorded. There are many ways to transfer files.
